Affordances are trivial
OpposingArgument
1
#497
Affordances are just another name for whatever it is in the environment that makes an organism respond as it does. But such a notion can't provide a substantial explanation of perception and adds nothing new to our knowledge of perception mechanism
For example, to say we recognize a shoe by perceiving its property of being a shoe doesn't explain anything.
Jerry Fodor & Zenon Pylyshyn (1981).

Yes: physical symbol systems can think [3]
Yes: physical symbol systems can think [3]âThinking is a rule governed manipulation of symbolic representational structures. In humans, symbol systems are instantiated in the brain, but the same symbol systems can also be instantiated in a computer. â59C6EF

The Representationalist Assumption »
The Representationalist Assumption
The Representationalist AssumptionâSymbol structures are internal representations of external reality, made up of symbols and operated on by psychological processes (inc. rules and search). Theyre constituent in that their meaning is a function of the meaning of their parts.â98CE71

The representational tradition is flawed »
The representational tradition is flawed
The representational tradition is flawedâClassical symbolic AI places too much emphasis on the role of representations in human intelligence. Acutal human thinking only becomes symbolic and representational when normal modes of cognition break down.âEF597B

The Situated Action Paradigm
The Situated Action ParadigmâThis approach to artificial intelligence emphasizes the situated and embodied character of cognition, and the role of affordances in the acquisition of perceptual information and the control of behaviour.â98CE71

Affordances are features of the environment
Affordances are features of the environmentâAffordances are directly perceived higher-order properties of things in the environmentâeg water affords swimming and floating, foods afford eating etc. Theyre envrionmental factors that an organism directly picks-up in order to maintain itself.â98CE71
