The Discounting the Future Problem
We intuitively tend to value near-term problems and outcomes much more than longer-term impacts and outcomes. When engaged in formal decision-making processes, this shows up in the use of a specific "discount rate." Personal and business discount rates tend to be high enough that the future beyond even just 5-15 years is severely discounted in our decision-making. This severely biases decision-making against climate – friendly outcomes.
