Kenya: M-PESA
Position
1
#121556
M-PESA is the result of a collaboration which saw DFID seed funding early product development by Vodafone.
M-PESA (‘mobile money’ in Swahili) is the result of a collaboration which saw DFID seed funding early product development by Vodafone. Thanks to this partnership a simple but game-changing product – a mobile-phone based money transfer service – has succeeded in allowing millions of Kenya’s very poorest people to engage in the economy in ways they've never done before.
The number of Kenyan adults with access to financial services rocketed by nearly ten million in just three years.
Now, building on this success, Vodafone and the local Equity Bank have launched M-KESHO, a facility that is helping people to open savings accounts for the first time in their lives. This has inspired similar initiatives – with nearly 70 mobile money platforms across the world. And the M-PESA platform is now being used to pay policemen in Afghanistan.
Something so small is transforming lives on a massive scale.

Excerpt / Summary
It’s the small things that often make a world of difference. A practical solution using mobile networks as the vehicle for transferring money might sound a simple concept to many of us, but it’s transforming millions of lives in a way no-one believed possible.
Banking facilities can be scarce in some geographic regions, particularly in rural areas and many people without bank accounts find it difficult or expensive to transfer money through traditional banking services. Carrying cash instead of being able to affect electronic transfer also poses a security risk.
That’s where M-PESA comes into play. It is an award-winning mobile money transfer service that we have launched in Kenya, Afghanistan and Tanzania. The phenomenal take-up of M-PESA is clear evidence that innovative, yet simple and practical solutions really do make a difference where it counts. In Kenya alone, it is estimated that almost a quarter of the population now uses M-PESA.
