Ana Maria Holstein Beck (1902-1966)
Portuguese Photographer.

Under a female gaze, Ana Holstein Beck captured more than 5900 pictures, between 1908 and 1956. These sequential photographs, imbued with a filmic quality that allows us to follow the actions, the amusements or even the conversations between people, present us with a feeling of presence, while also revealing gestures and ways of being and connecting.
Her first photographic album, produced when she was only 13 years old, fully portrays the Portuguese Royal Family as shot in 1915 and 1916, thus creating a narrative of their daily life during the troubled early years of exile, following the implantation of the Republic.
Ana Holstein Beck also allowed herself to be photographed, on several occasions, holding her photographic equipment on her chest. These were frequently ostentatious poses, impregnated with joy for the unconcealed pleasure she drew from photography, a liveliness that compelled her to shoot everything that elicited her curiosity and feelings.
In addition, she demonstrated a particular interest for capturing pictures of automobiles, having recurrently photographed the vehicles in which she travelled, their occupants, the adventures and happenings that occurred during the many trips, hunting expeditions and holidays shared with her friends.
She also staged several photo reports, with the purpose of documenting significant events, as was the case of the Medieval Procession of Lisbon, in 1935, the Exhibition of the Portuguese World, in 1940, the Blessing of the Cod-Fishing Boats, in 1943, and the Funeral Procession of the President of the Republic, António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona, in 1951.

*****
