John Mattison @F4H2014
In this talk given at the Franchise for Humanity, Stanford University, on Feb 20, 2014, John Mattison and Jacqueline Chan and talk about Aspiration in community and global health.

The second panelist, John Mattison, of Kaiser Permanente, feels that the sustainability of compassionate action really must start with the 'why?'

His wife taught him that we need to learn from our children...in particular, their ability to show us how to cultivate and grow empathy.

Similar to Jacqueline's quest, John asks: 'How do we assess the needs of a community and create a symphony of all the groups working with that community?'

John feels we really need to focus on the children, finding systematic ways to instill compassion and caring -- and systemic change will take 2-3 generations to really sustain itself.

His list of 5 key challenges in health care:

1. Pervasive influence of pharmaceuticals
2. Preventive care (evidence based)
3. Fee-for-service
4. End of life care
5. Disorders of life-style

On the last, disorders of life-style are bases for the current epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and links to heart issues, dementia, and many other health outcomes.

He finishes off roundly with big data, transparency, and deeper understanding of options, values, and outcomes.

Dr. Mattison recommends the book "The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies"

Jacqueline's work in Ecuador, Haiti, Thailand and Ethiopia have taught her the value of asking 'What does this community want?' instead of 'What can we do to get the outcomes we want for this community?'

Her early work in Ecuador started a journey of inquiry when she noted the many abandoned, crumbling cement structures of projects that likewise were working on drinking water quality, but had failed and abandoned the area. Deep reflection on this issue has lead to Jacqueline's development of expertise in public health epidemiology, grassroots mobilization, and community-driven development for improved health outcomes.

Her journey has also revealed the power of engaging the youth of the community, their dreams, and their aspirations.
