Symbols and causal connections insufficient
TegenArgument
1
#766
Symbols and causal connections aren't sufficient to produce meaning (or intentionality). If there's meaning in a system, it can only be because there's more to the system than just the fact of a symbol and the fact of a causal connection.
John Searle 1980a, 1980b, 1990b.

Yes: physical symbol systems can think [3]
Yes: physical symbol systems can think [3]âThinking is a rule governed manipulation of symbolic representational structures. In humans, symbol systems are instantiated in the brain, but the same symbol systems can also be instantiated in a computer. â59C6EF

The Chinese Room Argument [4]
The Chinese Room Argument [4]âInstantiation of a formal program isnt enough to produce semantic understanding or intentionality. A man who doesnt understand Chinese, can answer written Chinese questions using an English rulebook telling him how to manipulate Chinese symbols.âEF597B

Robot reply: Robots can think
Robot reply: Robots can thinkâImagine a computer system is put inside robot that has a TV camera for sight, mechanical arms for doing things, and legs for movement. Such a system, equipped like a human to interact with the world, would have genunine intentionality. âEF597B

Chinese Room can be placed inside the robotâMerely putting a computer program in a robot is inadequate because we can put the Chinese Room insde a robot and apply the same thought experiement as before.âEF597B

Causal connection to world is essential to meaning »
Causal connection to world is essential to meaning
Causal connection to world is essential to meaningâMental states become meaningfulâ intentional or semanticâthrough causal connecton via the senses to, and ability to act on, the external world. Searle doesnt show that no causal connection could ever produce meaning at all, just that his man cant.âEF597B
