Photoelectric Effect
The emission of electrons from a material exposed to light or crossed by high energy charged particles. In 1905 Einstein explained this observation by the absorption of light quanta, i.e. photons, that only eject electrons if they carry a sufficient amount of energy. In detectors, the electron signal is amplified and recorded to reconstruct the incoming particle trajectory and energy.
