Modeling behavioral change and COVID-19 containment in Mexico

  • Speaker: Jorge Velasco-Hernandez, Instituto de Matemáticas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México campus Juriquilla
  • Date and Time: Tuesday, April 5, 2022 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
  • Location: Online
  • Abstract: In this talk we will comment on model results on behavioural change and SARS-CoV-2 dynamics that we obtained early in the epidemic, particularly the relation between the learning process of social distancing and level of compliance with NPI. We will also comment on a particular methodology to model the epidemic in Mexico based on social behavioural traits associated with key calendar events.
  • Professor at the Instituto de Matematicas Unidad Juriquilla, Queretaro Mexico. Jorge Velasco-Hernandez obtained his PhD from Claremont Graduate University in 1991. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University (91-92,94-96). He is also founder of the Multidisciplinary Node in Applied Mathematics, a SIAM Fellow, and member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. He was the former President of the Mexican Mathematical Society. He has ample experience in management and direction of R&D projects at the Mexican Petroleum Institute. His present interests centre on the modelling of infectious diseases prevalent in Latin America and Mexico, in particular. To date, he is actively involved with the modelling of the COVID-19 epidemic in Mexico in collaboration with the National University of Mexico and the government of Mexico City.
