"Simon Buckingham Shum is a Senior Lecturer at the Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute, where he leads the Hypermedia Discourse Group. He brings a Human-Centred Computing perspective to the challenge of building Collective Intelligence and the sensemaking capacity that 21st Century citizenship requires, from childhood onwards. He has particular interests in the technology and practice of visualizing dialogue and argumentation.

His work ranges from the theoretical to very applied, funded by UK Research Councils (AHRC; EPSRC; ESRC), JISC e-Science/Virtual Research, Hewlett Foundation, UN-ILO, DARPA and British Council. He is a founding member of the Compendium Institute and GlobalSensemaking.net, and was Co-Founder and General Editor of the Journal of Interactive Media in Education, one of the early open source, web-native e-journals.

He served as Director of the Open University’s SocialLearn Project in 2009, on the Steering and Technical Groups of its Hewlett Foundation funded OpenLearn OER initiative (2006-08), and is an Investigator on the Open Learning Network Project to build collective intelligence for the OER movement (2009-12)."
