Fragment- Since the end of the Cold War the UK has led the way, by reducing the capability and increasing the transparency of our nuclear defence. We have cut the explosive power of our total stockpile by 75%; reduced the number of operationally available warheads to fewer than 160; and reduced the number of nuclear weapons delivery systems to just one, the submarine-based trident system. Our warheads are not targeted at any particular country, and they are at several days’ notice to fire.
We now possess only around 1% of the global nuclear warhead stockpile. We have made clear that, as soon as it becomes useful for the UK arsenal to be included in a broader negotiation, we stand ready to participate and to act. |
