Health and Safety Executive

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) [1] is a non-departmental public, responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare, and for research into occupational risks in England and Wales and Scotland [2]. HSE’s new strategy, ‘Helping Great Britain Work Well’, has identified priority themes for the next five years: acting together (promoting broader ownership of health and safety), tackling ill health, managing risk well, supporting small employers, keeping pace with change (anticipating new challenges), and sharing success (promoting Great Britain’s health and safety system). HSE will be looking to work increasingly to support business (particularly SMEs) in providing accessible, relevant advice and ‘challenging so-called “experts” who overprescribe and overinterpret requirements’ [3]
