Commitments from the Global Goals Community Data Event

  • Feel free to add progress against the commitments!

What it Was:

  • First public event of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, and first of a series of Community Data Events to happen around the globe particularly in the lead-up to the World Data Forum, slated for September 2016
  • Demonstration that the SDGs will be reached by everyone around the globe, and that the Global Partnership has the potential to recognize, elevate, and count individual progress toward the goals.
  • 65 people, two days, lots of post-it notes
  • Genuinely, perhaps surprisingly, a ton of fun.

SESSION EXAMPLES (Feedback requested):

  • To make this day as engaging as possible for, we’re asking for your feedback on the facilitated session topics. What problems would you most like to solve during the day? What data sets are you interested to see used more broadly in development, and how would you suggest collecting that data?  Feel free to add to the list below!
  • The thematic goals this event will focus on are: Poverty, Health, Gender, Forests, and Oceans.  After hearing from our speakers on Friday night, we’ll gather for a series of sessions on Saturday to focus on building visualizations for existing data gaps or actionable plans on resolving the data gaps. Sessions will cover topics such as:
  • Add ideas here:
    • How can community-generated data like the OpenStreetMap Project help to solve the Global Goals Data Gaps? - see http://mapkibera.org http://hotosm.org http://mapgive.state.gov http://openschoolskenya.org http://missingmaps.org http://healthsites.io/
    • How can we use existing data to create and monitor a Global Goal indicator that does not currently have data and/or a way to measure it? (e.g., a disaster risk reduction indicator)
    • If you had the data for a Global Goal indicator, what are the next top 10 issues that you would run in conjunction with that indicator? (E.g., if you had global data on the coverage of iron-folic acid supplements for pregnant women, what analyses and actions would you take?)
    • What can we do to analyze surveys from different sources (e.g., Governments, civil society, private sector) to generate datasets that can be used to answer broader quests?
    • How can we use the data we have to tell better stories and provide decision makers with actionable data?
    • How can we fix the link between data production and data publication?
    • How can we understand the role of culture, incentives, and processes in the use of data for decision making, particularly among partner country governments?
    • How can we better engage with users to design appropriate data and focus data creation investments more efficiently?’

Sessions we ended up having

  • Supporting Data Journalism & Storytelling - Goal #18?
  • WDF, WTF? (Aka what is the World Data Forum and what should it be)
  • Strategy for Oceans - example of Mauritius
  • Subnational Data & SDGs
  • Sustaining crowd-sourced data - examples with Map Kibera
  • Designing a Dashboard for the SDGs
  • Gender Data Gaps
  • Food Security Data Gaps
  • Role of Data Analysis firms - example from SAP

Data Infrastructure Considerations:

  • MapGive/OpenStreetMap
  • GeoNode: Open source web Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI); http://geonode.org/; Many cities and national governments are already deploying GeoNode as part of GFDRR’s OpenDRI (https://www.gfdrr.org/opendri) / Open Cities projects (http://www.opencitiesproject.org/) or State Department Office of the Geographer’s Secondary Cities Project (http://secondarycities.state.gov/).
  • CKAN: Open source data platform; http://ckan.org/; Already used by Data.Gov and HDX.  Used by many national government open data platforms.
  • Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX): United Nation’s Open Data platform for humanitarian response; No current equivalent for development data; Operated by UNOCHA.  -- https://data.hdx.rwlabs.org/
