Bryan Stone has an interesting claim, that story-telling (specifically with the text of a film) can foster meaning in individuals that allow them to re-form their reality to an alternate one, one of escape from actual reality. Stone comments that "the cinema asks many of our most profound questions and gives expression to our most noble aspirations and our most base impulses. In doing so, it reveals many of our deepest hopes and fears." (40) He is suggesting that the ending of films (and the film altogether) allows us to interpret components of our reality and use those determined meanings to shape a newer alternate reality. This information was important to my understanding of the existence of alternate realities, because we see how discourse and rhetoric are deeply rooted in notions of how reality is shaped.
