In Imagining the Impossible, Linda Sperry details story-telling to children as a means to shape their realities, and does so by explaining how "speech genres" function as way children and adults alike develop a sense of their human experience. Speech genres, as put by Sperry, are genres that "are situated in human activity" that also "afford particular ways of envisioning reality." (213) Children grow accustomed to the specific ways in which language surrounds their daily lives, and that is what develops their reality. They give us "specific ways of visualizing or imagining reality." (217) I found this information entirely pertinent. My scholarly quest was to seek the rhetoric behind alternate realities, and I believe we can use this source as an example. This information corroborates the idea that cultural speech genres (a type of rhetorical device in this scenario) influence reality. The question remains, where does the alternate reality exist? My answer isn't simple by any means, but indeed feasible. The only possible way to change the existing reality (to create some sort of alternate one) would logically be to change the specific speech genres within a community.
