Sustainable development
Ending poverty without jeopardising development for future generations

The 1987 Brundtland report defined sustainable development as:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

There was some concern that the competition between environmental activists and anti-poverty activists would mean that the idea of sustainable development would be lost.

Fortunately, for future generations, it seems not. The communique which followed the High Level Panel's second meeting in Monrovia, Liberia, talked of 'people-centred and planet sensitive' planning. (ODI, 2013)

The final report of the HLP states that sustainable development must be at the core of the post2015 agenda.
