Fragment- The gravity of security situation and frustration of NATO troops in fighting against the Afghan insurgency had invoked President Obama to look for alternative approaches to end the war in Afghanistan and promote the U.S.’s first success in the ‘war on terror’ mission. The main premise for this became the U.S.’s focus on preparing Afghan security forces to take over responsibilities by 2014. This is to enable a smooth withdrawal for the U.S. and an effective transition for Afghan national forces that will be responsible for providing security across the country.6 It should be clear for the U.S. that in the absence of international troops in Afghanistan; terrorism and extremism will grow and cause another global threat. The U.S. should denotes that the bitter experience of the post- soviet era which provided Osama bin laden and its Al-Qaida networks sanctuary in Afghanistan and Pakistan will not occur again. Therefore building upon the existing U.S. – Afghan relations, a clear and substantive approach, such as the strategic partnership that U.S has with non-NATO alliances would be essential to have with Afghanistan as well. |
