Unconscious and conscious states aren't identical
TegenArgument
1
#1084
Searle presupposes that any given unconscious state is identical to its conscious form. But identity is partly determined by causal powers, and the causal powers of an unconscious state are different from the causal powers of a conscious state.
Hence, the two mental states cannot be identical.
Jerry Fodor and Ernie Lepore (1994).

The Connection Principle
The Connection PrincipleâTheres a necessary connection between consciousness and mentality. All thinkingâas a form of mentalityâis a least in principle accessible to consciousness. Even unconscious thoughts involve consciousness, as they can potentially become conscious.â98CE71
