Rita Morais de Sarmento (1872–1931)
Portuguese Civil Engineer.

 

Rita Morais de Sarmento was born on the 11th of February of 1872, in Porto. At only 15 years of age, she joined the Polytechnic Academy of Porto. Two years later, in 1889, she graduated in Civil Engineering, thus becoming the first woman civil engineer in Portugal and also the first woman to obtain a degree at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
She was the youngest sister of Aurélia, Laurinda and Guilhermina Morais de Sarmento, all of whom were female pioneers in the field of Medicine, in Portugal. 
Rita Morais de Sarmento died in Porto, in 1931.

Rita Morais de Sarmento nasceu a 11 de Fevereiro de 1872 no Porto. Rita Morais de Sarmento matriculou-se em 1887 na Academia Politécnica do Porto, com apenas 15 anos, tendo concluído a licenciatura em Engenharia Civil em 1889. Foi a primeira mulher Engenheira Civil em Portugal e a primeira mulher a licenciar-se na Faculdade de Engenharia do Porto. Era a irmã mais nova de Aurélia, Laurinda e Guilhermina Morais de Sarmento (mulheres pioneiras em Medicina em Portugal).

Morreu no Porto em 1931.
