"In June 2010, 28-year-old Khaled Said was approached by police officers, presumably for a bribe, and beaten to death when he refused to give them money. A witness captured the image of the victim‟s bloodied face as proof of police brutality and operation outside the law. The image was widely circulated, and led to weeks of newspaper headlines and protests. The officers were later charged with illegal arrest, torture and excessive force, a rarity in Egypt.
