Libya has admitted that it pursued the development of nuclear weapons alongside its civil nuclear program from the end of the 1960s until 2003.
However,
in 2003 Libya halted its uranium enrichment program, submitted to full IAEA inspections, and formally renounced weapons of mass destruction.
The US and UK governments, working in conjunction with the IAEA, completed the process of removing the relevant nuclear-related equipment and materials from Libya in September 2004.
Currently, Libya has a small civill nuclear program, focusing primarily on research into seawater desalination.
