Isabel Maria Gago (1913-2012)
Portuguese Chemical Engineer.

In 1922, at only 8 years of age, Isabel Maria Gago joined the Female Institute of Education and Work - later renamed Institute of Odivelas - whose teaching methods she spoke highly of. Following five years of primary instruction and two years of secondary school, Gago, then 14 years old, transferred herself to the Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho Secondary School.
In 1933, she joined Lisbon´s Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), eventually becoming, in 1939, the first woman to graduate in the field of Chemical Engineering. After finishing her graduation, Gago remained working at IST, first as an assistant and later as a teacher, until her retirement, in 1984, at the age of 70.
