In her piece in the collection, Semiotica, Andrea DeCapua explores notions of language as a means to construct alternate realities. Her analysis of the German film, "Good Bye Lenin!," shows a set of characters that encounter visions, dreams, and an abundance of reality questioning moments in which she grounds her analysis. Her conclusion is as follows. The main character was constantly using language to talk up the conditions of Post-wall East Berlin to appease his struggling mother. Her argument was that the character was using language as a means to shape reality to not only the mother, but the viewer as well. This created a strange, alternate frame of reference, one that wasn't the truth but existed nonetheless. Understanding DeCapua's claims gave me a better understanding of how alternate realities come into existence from a rhetorical orientation.
