The Systems Reply
ArgumentOpposé
1
#752
We can consider the person in the room as part of a total system that includes the rule book, scratch paper, and data banks of Chinese symbols. The whole system, not only the person should be regarded as understanding Chinese.
Anticipated by John Searle 1908a, 1980b, 1990b.

Yes: physical symbol systems can think [3]
Yes: physical symbol systems can think [3]☜Thinking is a rule governed manipulation of symbolic representational structures. In humans, symbol systems are instantiated in the brain, but the same symbol systems can also be instantiated in a computer. ☜59C6EF

The Chinese Room Argument [4]
The Chinese Room Argument [4]☜Instantiation of a formal program isnt enough to produce semantic understanding or intentionality. A man who doesnt understand Chinese, can answer written Chinese questions using an English rulebook telling him how to manipulate Chinese symbols.☜EF597B

Chinese Room argument commits fallacy of composition
Chinese Room argument commits fallacy of composition☜Just because one part of the Chinese Room (the man shuffling the symbols) doesnt understand Chinese, it doesnt logically follow that the Chinese Room as a whole doesnt understand Chinese.☜98CE71

Man in room not in position to judge
Man in room not in position to judge☜Whether the room as a whole understands Chinese has nothing to do with the opinion of a homunculus within it. The mans perspective offers no evidence about the system as a whole and is irrelevant for determining whether the system has mentality.☜98CE71

Systems reply misses the point
Systems reply misses the point☜All the Room argument is intended to show is that instantiation of a program that understands Chinese isnt sufficient to prove understanding—as the man instantiates the program and doesnt understand Chinese, the rooms understanding is irrelevant.☜EF597B

The Internalisation Reply
The Internalisation Reply☜Suppose the man in the Room memorizes the rule book and all the symbols and does the matching in his head not on paper. He incorporates the entire Room system, but still doesnt understand Chinese. So the whole system doesnt understand Chinese.☜EF597B
