European Communications officer, Berlin, Germany


Seeking two European campaigns officers for our team in Berlin (June - October 2010)

Job description

After bringing the world together around the number 350 on Oct 24th last year with what CNN called 'the most widespread day of political action ever', 350.org is ready for the next challenge and wants your help.

Over the next six months, 350.org will help people 'get to work' with a massive worldwide demonstration of collective effort on practical solutions for the climate crisis. When governments aren't leading, it's time for citizens all over the world to lead them instead and demonstrate the power of what is possible. In preparations for global work parties next October 10, we are looking to hire two European campaigners to connect and support event organizers around Europe and assist 350 partner campaigns in specific European countries. We are specifically looking for passionate organizers who are excited about building a powerful grassroots movement in Poland, Scandinavia, Germany, France or Spain.

Responsibilities of the position will include: outreach to organizations in their native language; developing of partner campaigns in a specific country; email and phone communication with Oct 10th event organizers; research into political and media climate of individual countries; social networking outreach; materials development; translation and more. An ideal candidate for this position will have a variety of skills, including:

  • Multi-lingualism (preferably French, Spanish, Polish, German, or any Scandinavian language);
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and people skills;
  • Experience in campaigning for social change in one of the countries listed above;
  • Experience working as part of a team;
  • Capacity to multi-task and work nimbly, balancing multiple priorities and interruptions;
  • Understanding of, interest in, experience with projects that have a focus on sustainability, social change, advocacy. A knowledge of climate change activities in different countries is a major plus;
  • Experience in media work and communications (traditional and social media) a definite plus.

 

More than anything, we are looking for enthusiastic candidates who are willing to work hard for a cause they believe in. As a European campaigner, you'll be joining an international team of young organizers and work out of our European office in Berlin, Germany. Position running through October 2010 with potential continuation till December 2010. Salary to be determined.

In preparations for global work parties next October 10, we are looking to hire a European communications officer to help us spread 350.org's work to different European audiences. An extensive knowledge of traditional and social media channels in key European media markets are key to this post. We are specifically looking for passionate communicators who are excited about supporting powerful grassroots movement in Poland, Scandinavia, Germany, France, Spain and the UK. 

Responsibilities of the position will include: securing European, national and regional coverage, raising the public profile of 350.org's work, developing and implementing a media strategy around the 'Get to work' campaign, establishing relationships to European journalists, developing stories and ideas around our 'Get to Work' campaign, social media outreach, drafting press materials, and more.  An ideal candidate for this position will have a variety of skills, including:

  • Multi-lingualism (preferably French, Spanish or German next to English); 
  • Experience in media work in at least one of the key European media markets; 
  • Experience in developing and implementing media strategies; 
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and people skills; 
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly; 
  • Experience in working in the Non Profit Sector; 
  • Capacity to multi-task and work nimbly, balancing multiple priorities and interruptions;
  • Understanding of, interest in, experience with projects that have a focus on sustainability, social change, advocacy. A knowledge of climate change activities in different countries is a major plus.
