Although litigation, letter writing, lobbying, voting, passage of laws often accompany nonviolent struggles, nonviolent action occurs outside the bounds of institutional political channels.
Contrary to regular and institutionalised political activity, there is always an element of risk involved for those implementing nonviolent action since it presents a direct challenge to authorities.
