D1-1: Health & the Internet
Moderator: Mark Cullen. San Diego BEACH - Ted Chan and James Killeen. Global Health – Stefan Nachuk

"This day's discussion has drawn more clearly into focus what properties we are seeking in the people-centered network and what conditions may need to obtain in order to get there. I think analyzing the success of the San Diego initiative further would be of considerable value - it is very different from the Estonian situation where national government had a strong role. Scale might play a common role."

Vint Cerf, Chair of the Secretariat for the People-Centered Internet

  • Trust is critical
  • Data ownership is critical - Estonia citizens own it - early timing of this decision was particularly valuable
  • At every organizational decision - the person-patient's perspective must be incorporated
  • People should co-own their health data and - as in Estonia
  • Policy and regulations is key challenge - we need to move towards a more collaborative model of cooperation between government agencies
  • We need champions that have capacity to execute.
  • Global data infrastructure need - pandemic as a global driver - Epidemiological data - global threat need for data
  • How important is to overcome Adoption barriers

  • Drivers - incentives - vital for co-creation - How does health literacy become a driver for families?
  • How important is knowledge curation.
  • How to develop a federated model at a global level?
  • No difference in 2 presentations other than different ecosystems - one focused on providers use of info and the other on individuals or families use of information - adaptation relies on understanding of cultures to sustain adoption.
  • Privacy is still a big barrier to adoption of federated health information systems.
  • Families can serve as navigators of knowledge.
  • Things only work when the required conditions are met.
  • Multinational agencies have a big role to play in driving a top down change in development culture
  • Must add a portal for mobile health-wearables so that person can contribute vital context - what is going on in my life and my family.
