Augmenting
Doug advocated the use of technology that augments our collective and individual abilities (for ex. to 'augment our collective intelligence'). This may be contrasted to developing technology to replace humans ('artificial intelligence').

A variant of this idea may be worth pointing at: When a scientist (for ex. a systems scientist) consciously acts so as to augment our collective understanding of or benefits from his field (such as systems science), his priorities and actions are likely to be entirely different than when he acts as a conventional scientist (and aims to increase the knowledge in his discipline).

When technology is used to best augment our abilities, the result can be radically different than when we use it to maximize adoption, ease of use, and profit. The bicycle metaphor.
