Earlier this year, a Minnesota jury found a working mother liable for $1.92 million in penalties for copyright infringement. Currently a BU student is facing a similar trial for illigally downloading music, ececpt he faces up to $4 million in penalties if found guilty. Record companies are doing anything they can to get back some of the money they feel they are losing out on because of online downloading. With record companies becoming more and more obsolete one can only expected that there will begin to be more cases like these.
It appears the courts are backign the record companies since they have already convicted a working mother to pay back quite a bit of money and its looking like a college student is going to be in a similar situation. Both the courts and the record companies are trying to send a message that if you download illegally, you will caught and you will pay the price. |
