The fourth and final word in my question that is worth analyzing is “reality.” The dictionary definition of the word reality is “the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.” This is a strongly materialistic definition of reality, in my opinion. I believe that this is indeed an important component of any reality, however you leave out the ability of humans to perceive and create their own reality. In “The Social Construction of Reality,” Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann explore the concept that knowledge and tradition passed down through societal interaction is what imposes order on reality. This goes well with what I stated previously because reality is more than the things that live in it, human interaction and societal consciousness is what enhances and characterizes any given reality. These concepts will help in the development of my question because I realize now that consciousness and reality can be interpreted on a singular level as well as on a societal one. Any individual or group could potentially perceive reality differently, and the idea that simply existing constitutes reality isn’t accurate enough to describe what people perceive.
