One important function of all moral teaching is to raise good children. Parenting is embedded in our society as one place where kids learn right from wrong, and it is important for parents to remember as their actions will provide the example for their children to follow. I took this parenting idea and translated it to my initial claim, arguing that you don’t necessarily need religious influences to be able to teach your kids good morals. If the previous statement is true, then this is one possible area where non faithful people can be raised to be truly moral and therefore could be granted access to heaven. I looked for information that both parties could orient themselves to, the concept of “good parenting.” In Sean Curley’s book, Humanism for Parents: Parenting Without Religion, the word “violence” is discussed as a major component of morality. If children are taught to never use violent action, they will eventually grow up to be mainly moral people, according to Curley. Furthermore, he argues that the Bible isn’t a great place to learn moral lessons because the lessons taught are commonly violent ones. Curley also explains how society has a moral system in place that parents attach to, completely separate from religious teachings. Children are rewarded for good actions and punished for bad, one simple way that a notion of right and wrong is planted in a child’s mind. This information helped me develop the idea that society has been practicing morality since its creation, and moral people should have access to heaven as well.
