Jevons Paradox
Demand for biofuels will rise if significant amounts of agricultural land are diverted to biofuel production—due to the Jevons Paradox, which argues that as technological developments increase the efficiency with which a resource is used, consumption of that resource also increases.

Demand for coal in Britain in the 19th century which rose, rather than fell, when furnaces became more efficient.
