Is welfare to blame for welfare dependency?
Gilder (1981) states that the expansion of the public assistance system led to an erosion of work ethic and self-reliance.  He contends that as these benefits increase the value of a man's labor to his family decreases.  The welfare system saps his dignity by making him less necessary to his family.
