Evolutionary adaptation
Opinion

#110919
There are good reasons for thinking that evolutionary selection would favor creatures with tensed beliefs about and attitudes to future and past events.

The Arrow of Time
The Arrow of Time ☜A map exploring some issues concerning the nature of time that lie at the boundary of physics and philosophy. The map follows up a talk to the Blackheath Philosophy Forum on 2 April 2011 by Huw Price, Professor of Philosophy and director of the Center for Time at Sydney University.☜F1CEB7

The experience of time
The experience of time☜This branch of the map considers the phenomenology of time - the various ways in which time presents itself directly to our consciousness. Why do we think time has the features indicated by the passage view? The answers will hopefully enable us to connect the phenomenological to the physical.☜FFB597

Two other time asymmetries
Two other time asymmetries☜In addition to the standard passage view components, two additional asymmetries are addressed in this part of the map. These are the asymmetry of concern - we are much more concerned about the future than the past; and asymmetry of agency - we feel we can influence the future, but not the past.☜FFB597

Asymmetry of concern
Asymmetry of concern☜We more concerned about the future than about the past. We might anticipate or fear future events, and regret past ones. Can the block universe view that sees past present and future as equally real explain tensed beliefs and tensed emotions?☜FFB597

A 'just-so' story☜To claim that tensed beliefs are an evolutionary adaption is an example of a just-so story: an unverifiable narrative account purporting to explain some observed phenomenon.☜EF597B

Tensed beliefs - not tensed facts
The block universe view (or McTaggart 'B-theory') does not deny that beliefs can be tensed, such as the belief that some unpleasant experience is past. However the truth-maker for any tensed belief is a tenseless fact.

Plausibility defense
Evolutionary explanations differ greatly in plausibility. The above account of the origin of tensed beliefs is at the plausible end of the spectrum.

"Why do we care differently about the past and the future? One answer to this question is immediately obvious. Horwich suggests the following explanation:
'An organism that wanted its future selfish desires to be satisfied would flourish relative to an organism that didn’t care; however there is no particular advantage in wanting past desires to have been satisfied.'
Dread, fear and anticipation are all tensed emotions that might plausibly have evolved to make us better able to avoid dangerous experiences and maximise beneficial ones. Dreading danger in ancestral environments may have caused us to work out ways of avoiding conflict or to devise safer hunting techniques. Fear leads to increased alertness as part of the ‘fight or flight’ response, which is obviously adaptive in organisms faced with dangerous predators or indeed dangerous prey. Obviously none of these emotions is adaptive if directed toward past events precisely because we lack causal influence over those events. This observation is the evolutionary equivalent of ‘there’s no point crying over spilt milk’."
