That's not what is being pointed out.
yes, civil unions and same-sex marriage are not recognized everywhere. That is actually the reason for the debate. But, it is not a argument against that civil unions offer less rights than marriage.
The point is a non-sequiter.  I said civil unions offer less rights than marriage (1,138 right to be exact), and you counter with civil unions and same-sex marriage are not recognized everywhere. it doesn't logically follow.
