Test for the viability of a source of energy
The minimal test is whether a source can yield more energy at points where it is used than is required to get it and get it to the point of use. Obviously the bigger this yield, the preferable the source. Yield is bigger if nature has already concentrated a lot of energy where it can be obtained.
