Environmental regulations encourage illegal e-waste shipments

"As the environmental regulations become more stringent in the advanced nations, the volume of e-waste shipped off illegally increases. Gattuso (2005) have argued that due to the imposition of a ban on desktops from municipal landfills in the US, the scrap export has increased to countries where there is no such ban. Thus the so-called ‘recyclers’ in the US in reality act as scrap brokers since actual e-waste management proves to be an expensive operation when one is forced to abide by the prevailing environmental standards."
