Ana Vicente was born in Lisbon on the 8th of February, 1943. She was daughter of Luis de Oliveira Marques and Susan Lowndes.
She worked as a teacher and a translator at the beginning of her career. After the Carnation Revolution (25th of April of 1974), Vicente worked for the Commission for the Equality and Rights of Women (CIG), an institution that she would later preside over, between 1992 and 1996. She was connected with the National Strategy for the Fight Against Drugs, the VIDA (life) Project, besides having worked at the offices of Maria de Lourdes Pintassilgo and Maria Leonor Beleza. Moreover, she was a consultant for the United Nations Population Fund and a member of the “We are Church” International Movement. Additionally, she integrated the CID group - whose purpose was to assure the quality of the institutional welcoming of children, elderly and disabled people -, was a founding member of the “New Future” Family Housing Association for Children and Youngsters, as well as a member of the International Amnesty, of the Portuguese Association of Studies on Women and of the Forum of Education for Citizenship.
Vicente published several thematically diverse books, among them a biography of her family, works concerning Portuguese women and also children´s books. She collaborated in the development of the Female Dictionary (19th to 20th centuries) and the Feminae Contemporary Dictionary (2013). She died in Estoril, Cascais, on the 19th of March, 2015.
Ana Vicente nasceu em Lisboa a 8 de Fevereiro de 1943. Era filha de Luis de Oliveira Marques e Susan Lowndes. Foi professora e tradutora no início da sua carreira. Após o 25 de Abril de 1974 trabalhou na Comissão para a Igualdade e para os Direitos das Mulheres (CIG), instituição da qual foi presidente entre 1992 e 1996. Esteve também ligada ao Programa Nacional de Combate à Droga, Projecto VIDA, e trabalhou nos gabinetes de Maria de Lourdes Pintassilgo e de Maria Leonor Beleza. Foi ainda consultora do Fundo das Nações Unidas para a População e membro do Movimento Internacional “Nós Somos Igreja”.
Integrou também o grupo CID – Crianças, Idosos, Deficientes, Cidadania, Instituições, Direitos, cujo objectivo era garantir a qualidade de acolhimento institucional desses três grupos.
Foi Membro fundador da Associação de Lares Familiares para Crianças e Jovens "Novo Futuro", Membro do Movimento Internacional "Nós Somos Igreja" (trazido para Portugal em 1997 por Maria João Sande Lemos e pela própria), Membro da Amnistia Internacional e da Associação Portuguesa de Estudos sobre as Mulheres e Membro do Fórum de Educação para a Cidadania.
Publicou vários livros, dos quais se salientam as obras: Arcádia – Notícia de uma Família Anglo-Portuguesa (2006) no qual conta a história da sua família; As Mulheres em Portugal na Transição do Milénio (1998); As Mulheres Portuguesas vistas por Viajantes Estrangeiros, sec. XVIII, XIX e XX (2000 e 2001); Ser Igreja (org. por Ana Vicente e Leonor Xavier), (2007). Foi também autora de livros infantis: O H Perdeu uma Perna; Para que serve o Zero?; Onde está o Mi?; Onde acaba o Arco-Íris?; Como passa o Tempo?, todos com ilustrações de Madalena Matoso (2005-2008).
Colaborou na elaboração do Dicionário no Feminino (séculos XIX-XX) (2005) e no Dicionário Contemporâneo Feminae (2013).
Morreu no Estoril, em Cascais, a 19 de Março de 2015.
