Excerpt / Summary Water cannot be created. The water that existed a billion years ago on Earth is the same water we have today. All of the water on Earth is recycled. As our water diminishes and is not replenished, it is very important that we understand how easily water is wasted. Awareness of how water is wasted is the first step to conserving water.
Around the world, many people survive on 3 gallons of water or less per day. Americans use that amount in one flush of the toilet.
Common Uses Of Water
Bathing, watering your lawn, washing your clothes and fueling your car, all can be cut back. Even electricity usage impacts how much water you use each day. The typical American uses 670 gallons of water a day for electricity, since power plants use water to cool their systems.
One bath can use up to 70 gallons of water, where as a 5 minute shower can use up to 25 gallons. Brushing your teeth can use up to 4 gallons of water. When taking these numbers into your everyday life, just remember that turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth can save water. The average American’s lifestyle uses 2,000 gallons of water a day. This is twice the global average. With this astonishing average it is not hard to see that every little bit helps. National Geographic has created a Water Footprint Calculator to measure how much water you use each day. This test allows you to see where you can cut back in your usage. |
