Tackling obesity in the UK
Tackling obesity in the UK☜With concern growing that the Foresight analysis—that 50% of the UK population could be obese by 2050, at an annual cost to the nation of around £50 billion per year [2]—substantially underestimates the scale of the unfolding obesity crisis, the College of Contemporary Health is working with the wider policy community to develop a whole systems map of the obesity crisis and the potential responses.☜F1CEB7

Tackling obesity
Tackling obesity☜Many policy interventions have been suggested to address the obesity crisis across multiple studies—and indeed many such measures have been implemented, and are being implemented, now. Theres recognition too that these interventions need to be part of a coherent and comprehensive whole systems strategy [4]; with some grounds for optimism that such an approach has the potential to accomplish a significant reduction in the prevalence of obesity in the UK across the next decade. Invest in employee health and wellbeing☜Encourage organisations to invest employee health and wellbeing; including a health risk assessment and the provision of resources to help employees address the factors that pose the greatest risk to their health and wellness. [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]☜5CA4D9

Strong business case for investment in employee health and wellbeing☜Investing in the health and wellbeing of employees makes business sense. It has been estimated that working age ill-health costs the UK £100 billion per annum, more than the annual budget for the NHS. In 2009–10, 23.4 million days were lost due to work-related ill-health.☜98CE71

Excerpt / Summary
Absenteeism is an employee’s intentional or habitual absence from work. While employers expect workers to miss a certain number of workdays each year, excessive absences can equate to decreased productivity and can have a major effect on company finances, morale and other factors. This article looks at the causes of absenteeism, the costs of lost productivity and what employers can do to reduce absenteeism rates in the workplace.

Excess weight also significantly increases the risk of workplace injuries (e.g. back injuries and falls); some evidence suggests that individuals are 40% to 50% more likely to experience a gamut of injuries at work if they fall in the overweight category. [1]

Excerpt / Summary
“All in all, workers with obesity are more likely to be absent from work due to long and short-term disability.” According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, obesity-related chronic conditions accounted for $4.3 billion in direct and indirect costs in 2005. This figure may have been an underestimation as it included costs for only eight chronic conditions and did not factor in costs for individuals who fall in the overweight category but do not have obesity.
