Notes

Jim Caldwell was at Civic City Sustainability Initiatives last night - talking about SF and Manila.  SF presented on where they're at, the challenges.  Everyone is having a stake-holder's issue.  Have been asking ppl to voluntarily save water, but ppl don't have a clue what they're talking about.

Comparing efforts in Phillipines, SF, China, etc.

Chinese dream is to empower stake-holders, but afraid of giving too much power, as may overthrow govt.  The public owns the info, but govt agencies are afraid to share it, as may mis-use it.  ppl are not the aware of the big picture.  Where is the safe water, not polluting it, and so forth.

Denise:  Have had a whirl-wind week.  Nine mtgs in 22 hrs in Silicon Valley.  Had dinner with the China Embassador Whu Jhen (sp?).

Plug - n - Play is an incubator in the SV area

Mei Lin is connected with it

An international establishment

Should organize a tour of Plug-N-Play for F4H

VCs hold open office hours 2-3 x per week

Hadn't realized the impact it would have on Denise.

To Denise it's the Hollywood of Silicon Valley

Tammy - working on developing the platform for mentorship/matching

algorithm.  Have a developer willing to give info on some things they

could do to make it happen.  A lot of existing open source software they

could use.  Henry had mentioned a need for capturing existing projects of ppl

working on something similar. Had a talk with the developer - may be possible for

ppl to fill out a form and indicate what they are working on. Would be able to do

a key-word search and put in what they're working on.  Instead of capturing projects,

capturing lab notes - they are thinking of using the same technology.

Organize in categories and keyword search.

Mei Lin - would like to talk about WorkReadyGrads as well and how this ties in

(Brian Srikanchna, CEO at WorkReadyGrad)

Kennan - AAAS thinking of having a booth at the annual meeting.

Also a retreat in Minneapolis for doing a Third Space in the hospital environment

Mei Lin:  This brings up that issue of stake-holder engagement.  Can think of no one better than Denise.

~

Two topics on deck:

1.  Feedback on the WorkReadyGrad session from last week.

Denise:  His idea is brilliant.  Was at hdqtrs for Waiwei in San Jose the next day. Had a whole convo with her about WorkReadyGrad.  She was so intrigued, wanted more info.

Mei Lin:  Has scheduled a call to speak with him on Thursday at 3pm this week.  Sees ways to put more gamification into it (with Dan Esbensen).  Links with what Tammy was talking about earlier - ppl who are working on projects together can find each other.  Having someone that dedicated who has gone that far - has credibility coming out of Georgia Tech.

Tammy:  More interested in teh technology that was behind it, and how he built his revenue and business model.  Govt agencies, businesses etc willing to pay to be able to recruit from his company.  Really appreciated how dedicated and passionate he is about his project.  Not making any money out of it but strongly believing in it.

Q:  What do ppl think of the implicit statement to invite him to F4H?

Kennan:  Yes

Tammy:  When the topics are too broad, it tends to cause ppl to not want to be involved, because it's too big.  If someone is in green industry, but project is in edu industry, how do they get involved?

Jim:  Stakeholder engagement piece is about education, so I think it really fits.  If ppl aren't educated on what's possible, they don't get involved.  Colorado had a problem about HS grads not going to college - was on 60 Minutes last night - got college courses to be taught in HS.  Enrollment went up considerably as students became aware of what was possible in college, wanted to do it.  Same with Green industry - once ppl get their hands dirty, they love it, generally.

Robert:  On bringing new ppl onto the call.  Have to steer b/w two dangers - parochialism if you don't, but if you bring ppl who aren't quite on the same wavelength, have the problem of oil on water - spread out in all directions and become too thin.  The way to work that is to have a clear vision, make sure everyone stays focused on the vision - a strong one that pl are orbiting around, that helps.

2.  TV show on F4H next Wed that Mei Lin will be hosting and producing July 23rd.

We're at a beginning stage - not even 6 months old.

Denise:  Love the idea of the show and the 6 month anniversary.  Always nice to celebrate 'where we came from' at anniversary dates.  Denise - would also like to include a male perspective.

Denise:  Would you like to have our camerman there to document the show?

Mei Lin:  Yes

Denise:  July 23rd and 24th videotaping in many locations for a virtual program with many interviewees.  Very interesting technology.  Social Media Technology for corporations and CEOs to instantly connect.

Jim:  Meeting of the Minds Conference every year does that - shooting the show and change focus from one location to another during the meeting.  Doing  it in Detroit this year.

Final word – July 15th meeting

Mei Lin Fung - We invite anyone who is around July 23 in Palo Alto to be in studio audience, but is really late at night (9pm - 10pm). We should think ahead to the 1 yr anniversary show, which would take place in January.  Maybe what we would like to show is what we are working on now.  Like Omega having great success via Kickstarter program.  Maybe the Drum Beat of a show every 6 months gives us a focus to have things to show.

Tammy Chan - Just thinking that one of the directions for the meeting notice each week is to put some highlights from each meeting.  For instance, today, the TV show for JustPictureIt.  So maybe some highlights from each call.  So people get a heads' up for the next meeting.  Also really looking forward to getting things going and making things happen.

Kennan Salinero - Honored

Jim Caldwell - Delighted with the group, even more delighted that we're going to try to sum up and focus on this TV show.  We are doing so many different things, one of my challenges is to keep myself focused, as I'm always going in five different directions.  As we are, trying to work with all of humanity if we can.  Thank you.

Denise O'Brien - I like the word progress. Even when it's 15 or 5 ppl.  I always learn something from each of us that shares.  Sometimes not what we expect.   That there is such a strong work ethic and I know ppl are working as hard as I am.  I push myself to figure out how to get on the call, no matter what I'm doing.

Stan Gould - Just catching up, enjoying the progress

Rob Stephenson - TV show sounds like a really good idea. Unfortunately missed the WorkReadyGrad.  Where do I find the notes?  A:  go into the reminder email from Tammy for July 25th call - the archives of weekly project summaries has a link to archived notes from the last meeting

David - If you're thinking 6 months, if you're thinking of a physical gathering.  (Mei Lin - we're likely to have Feb 19th and 20th F4H next year.)

Biomimicry as a model for eco system development. Proposed model:

Smart Buildings and Built Environments will have energy to empower stakeholders and their ecosystems when internal and external energies are dynamically balanced; They fail when they become too rigid, waste resources or fall too far out of balance.

Buildings, like natural living systems, must evolve internally and externally as other systems in their universe change. “Energy,” “Economy” and “Environment” are symbolic of many variables -- including people, families, communities and organizations of all kinds; power grids, food, water/waste management systems and the communication/transportation systems that connect them.

The opportunity is to create and maintain smart, dynamically balanced buildings and built environments that optimize the available energy/resource mix and empower the resilient development of smart people, buildings, built environments and ecosystems.
