Antonio Hernandez is in his sixth year at HOSA, currently serving as the first National President of this 150,000 strong youth organization. He is a State and National Gold Medalist in Medical Reading. His leadership journey began with two years as President of the Dozier-Libbey Medical High School HOSA Chapter taking him to the leadership of California HOSA as State President. HOSA follows a two-pronged development model. 1) Students learn leadership skills and 2) Students learn the specific skills needed for a career in health.In the curricular based skills, competitions in such diverse areas such as medical literature reading, CPR, extemporaneous speaking, job-seeking skills, etc comprise the sixty-six different areas developed through competition. It's also very much about learning soft skills and habits for leadership as well as team-work. Using the aspirations assessment metric: - Goal: HOSA is about building a more compassionate and better prepared health care community.
- Challenges: Getting students to know it exists - communicating the purpose of 'HOSA' is difficult to explain. They find people get 'HOSA feve'r when they attend the HOSA conferences. As an organization they are less focused on doctors and nurses, and more on allied health and team practices.
