Yochanan ben Zakkai and the Moderates
A renowned Torah sage who counseled peace, arguing that a compromise might bring heavier taxes and religious restrictions, but at least Judaism would survive. After civil war between Zealots and moderates erupted in Jerusalem in 68 C.E., Ben Zakkai escaped Judea and established Yavneh.
