Excerpt / Summary
When you are a visionary, it’s hard to get other people to see as you do. When you have a plan to save the world through men and computers working together, as Doug Engelbart had, it’s hard to enlist the guys at the water-cooler to take part in the crusade. They called him kooky, and laughed at him for doing weird stuff.

Excerpt / Summary
Silicon Valley can sometimes be so focused on enfant terribles and excessive riches; Douglas Engelbart is a reminder that part of the founding story behind the computer was Doug's quest to literally accelerate human evolution. He thought that computers would be as important as writing and language have been in terms of shaping human evolution. It's important to remember this in our day of IPO this and stock market that. One of the original founders of the computer revolution wanted to literally bend the arc of human history, not just make a new social sharing game. Talk about awesome ambition :)

A few words on Doug Engelbart

Excerpt / Summary
Doug Engelbart died today. His work has always been very difficult for writers to interpret and explain.
Technology writers, in particular, tend to miss the point miserably, because they see everything as a technology problem. Engelbart devoted his life to a human problem, with technology falling out as part of a solution. When I read tech writers' interviews with Engelbart, I imagine these writers interviewing George Orwell, asking in-depth probing questions about his typewriter.
