A customer has a legal evidence of arrangement
An online agreement signed digitally, would not be a reliable customer definition.

GAAP/GARP requires the Seller to Perform Due Diligence on any commerce transaction beyond in Person point of sale activities, which are contacts through a channel.
Marketing may influence and it's usually a once removed relationship or value added to a master data record in a view.  The record themselves are not changed based on marketing inputs instead enriched only.   The quality and validation performed by marketing not entitled to create a customer.
