What is the technological approach, or development roadmap?
The entire project will be developed as an open source application. Current open source learning management system platforms that match the specifications for this project include Canvas, National Training & Education Resource (NTER) and Google Course Builder. Social learning capabilities, such as Google Docs / Media / Apps will be integrated into the course model. Mozilla Open Badges, and the ADL xAPI (Tin Can) will be added to the environment, to track student learning and achievement, as well as include student tracking records for facilitators and mentors.
The Model System Laboratory, under a National Science Foundation Grant, “Arabidopsis: Affinity handle on macromolecular complexes,” includes an initiative to support biological science development in urban schools. Through collaboration between the Model Systems Lab, the Institute for Urban Education and our team, the curriculum will:
• Link practical knowledge of biology (observable) to laboratory research • Support non-science inquiry into biological science • Prepare new teachers to educate others in scientific inquiry • Provide tools and resources to teachers in urban school environments
The Model Systems Biology course is part of an effort through the Institute for Urban Education (IUE) to make real biological science investigation accessible to urban schools and students, through a blending of interactive online experiments, and kitchen counter experiments.
Although the course will be targeted at urban school teachers, the community, interested students, parents, and others will be welcome to participate." |
