At the Rio+20 conference, states agreed to set up a process for creating a set of Sustainable Development Goals, partly because the MDGs were seen as a success. This was alongside the UN Sec-Gen's plan to renew the development agenda after 2015. This led some to believe that there was a danger of competing sets of goals. While the High Level Panel on post-2015 and the group working on Sustainable Development Goals are separate, the UN's Amina Mohammed has said that they are running in parallel and are not in competition. Several actors have urged one holistic set of goals (such as UK development secretary Greening) - surely a likely outcome? The SDG working group is due to report to the UN General Assembly in Sept 2014, so it's likely that the work of the High Level Panel will feed into the group's plans. |
