Eradicating corruption has been long overdue and yet probabilities of eradicating corruption in the Philippines in the near term might still be a romantic fantasy.
During the SWS September 1998 survey, respondents were asked why graft and corruption happens [in the government].
The three top reasons cited were:
- to be richer;
- their salaries are not enough; and
- difficulties of life today.
Those are still the reasons today. As if these reasons are justified, are they clear indications of wrong values?
These apply to the private sector as well or wherever 'low hanging fruits' are. From the answers alone, one can see that this problem is systemic/ endemic.
So, do we Filipinos really want to eradicate corruption?
