Most water treatment plants cannot handle this type of waste.
Fracking is a process that uses enormous amounts of water mixed with chemicals to break layers of rock and release gas. Most Marcellus wells are horizontal wells in order to reach shale. As a result, each horizontal well may create millions of gallons of wastewater than a vertical well.
A few notable problems
  • What to do with the wastewater from fracking? The Western states drillers store wastewater long-term in injection wells, however, Northeast drillers process the wastewater through municipal and industrial treatment plants that aren't equipped to remove such contaminants as TDS (total dissolved solids), radium, etc.
  • Benzene has been found in wastewater which is highly carcinogenic.
  • TDS are 5 times more salty than seawater
