There is a very interesting study made by a team of MIT faculty, graduate students and a board of 18 industry leaders in the field of natural gas extraction. The study found some interesting results and recommendations for going forward with safer approaches to natural gas drilling. A few conclusions summarized here:
- 42 documented cases of water contamination from tens of thousands of wells drilled
- the environmental impacts did exist but could be managed
- for the cases of contamination the common root problem boiled down to cementing issues with the well casings
There are also reports from the Southern Methodist University that list ways of improving emissions from natural gas production in a cost-effective way.
