1. The Five-Year Engagement

Beginning where most romantic comedies end, this charts the ups and downs of an engaged couple’s relationship (Segal, Blunt) and how something that starts out so strong can change over time. From the trailer it looks like it’s the woman delaying the wedding for her career and the guy wants to get on with it – only in the movies, eh. Produced by Judd Apatow and from the director of the excellent Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. This looks less interesting than both of those, but on his past record he has to be given the benefit of the doubt. The writers (Segal and the director) say they were strongly influenced by When Harry Met Sally and how it handled a relationship that spanned many years.
Starring: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Out: 27th April 2012
2. The Lucky One

A marine (Efron) travels to North Carolina after serving three tours in Iraq and searches for the unknown woman he believes was his good luck charm during the war. Despite her initial mistrust, and complications in her life from being a divorcee with a son, a romance develops between them. This is based on the 2008 novel by Nicholas Sparks, the prolific author of the likes of The Notebook and Dear John. In fact, this is his seventh movie. Some have doubts that Efron can shake his Disney background to play a convincing marine, but he’s an underrated actor. From the director of Shine and No Reservations, this looks a lot like Dear John.
Starring: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Jay R. Ferguson, Blythe Danner
Director: Scott Hicks
Out: 20th April 201
3.Titanic 3

“Neeear. Faaaar. Wherever you arrre.” Don’t pretend you didn’t cry. The biggest grossing movie of all time (until Avatar) returns with the top end 3D conversion treatment. James Cameron is overseeing this whole thing personally so you can be sure he won’t let a shoddy 3D product slip through. How will world audiences respond to this second time round? It’s a movie that feels, strangely, of its time. I guess this means Kate Winslet will be nude in 3D, wonder how she feels about that.
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane
Director: James Cameron
Out: 6th April 2012
4. The Vow

A car accident puts Paige (McAdams) in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo (Tatum) works to win her heart again. This plot has similarities to The Notebook, which also starred McAdams, and that’s no accident given how popular it is. Channing is a bit wooden in the trailer and I get the sense his popularity with the ladies is starting to wane. Early screenings produced a so-so reaction.
Starring: Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Jessica Lange, Scott Speedman, Sam Neill
Director: Michael Sucsy
Out: 10th February 2012 (U.S. Release Dates)
5. Perfect Sense

Bleak Glasgow-set romantic drama about a chef (McGregor) and a scientist (Green) who fall in love as an inexplicable epidemic robs people of their senses one by one. Reviews have been mixed, with reaction ranging from “ambitious” and “moving” to “pretentious, with a wholly unnecessary voiceover”. The romantic plot is less significant than the trailer would have you believe.
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Eva Green, Connie Nielsen, Stephen Dillane, Ewen Bremner
Director: David Mackenzie
Out: 10th February 2012
